In Rwanda, where graft and bribes between lawmakers were commonplace, tensions between the Hutu-controlled government and Tutsi rebels resulted in the genocide in April 1994. The proprietor of the Hôtel des Mille Collines, Paul Rusesabagina, is Hutu, but Tatiana, his wife, is Tutsi. Their union is a point of contention with Hutu extremists, including Georges Rutaganda, a hotel supplier of products who also serves as the local commander of the brutal Hutu militia Interahamwe. General Augustin Bizimungu of the Rwandan Army, who supports the Hutu, is someone Paul currys favor with. Paul and his family witness neighbors being murdered after the president, a Hutu, is assassinated, starting the first stages of the genocide. Paul narrowly manages to secure his neighbors’ safety when civil war breaks out and a Rwandan Army Captain threatens them, bringing them to the hotel. When he returns with them, he discovers Gregoire, his snobbish receptionist, taking the presidential suite and threatening to reveal the Tutsi refugees—including Paul’s wife—if he is forced to go to work. It is forbidden for the Canadian Colonel Oliver-led UN peacekeeping troops to get involved in the conflict and stop the genocide. The Rwandans are left behind while the foreign citizens are evacuated. More evacuees—800 in total, both Tutsi and Hutu—arrive at the hotel from the overcrowded UN camp, the Red Cross, and different orphanages. Tatiana looks for her brother, sister-in-law, and two daughters in a desperate manner. Paul has to keep his family safe, care for the refugees, divert the Hutu troops, and keep the exterior of the 4-star hotel looking operational as the situation becomes more violent. Gregoire betrays a group of refugees that the UN troops are trying to evacuate, including Paul’s family, to the Interahamwe, who use radio broadcasts to approach them.
