In 1975, Apollo Creed, the heavyweight boxing world champion, made plans to stage a championship fight in Philadelphia during the upcoming 200th anniversary of the United States. Five weeks before the scheduled fight, he learns that Mac Lee Green, his opponent, will not be able to participate because of a hand injury. Creed chooses to add some spice by challenging a local challenger because all other potential replacements are either already committed or otherwise unavailable. Due to his nickname, The Italian Stallion, Rocky Balboa, an Italian American journeyman southpaw boxer who competes mostly in small gyms and works as a collector for a loan shark, is chosen by Creed. Rocky assumes that Creed is looking for local sparring partners when he talks with promoter George Jergens. Rocky initially struggles to agree to the fight, which will earn him $150,000, but ultimately gives in. Rocky goes through several weeks of unconventional training, which includes using beef sides as striking bags.

Later, Mickey Goldmill, a former bantamweight combatant turned trainer whose gym Rocky frequents, approaches Rocky to inquire about additional training. Rocky initially refuses the offer because Mickey hasn’t shown much interest in helping him and thinks he’s a wasted talent; however, Rocky ultimately accepts the offer.
