Gordon “Gordie” Lachance, a writer, reads a story from the newspaper about a fatal stabbing. Vern got married right out of high school, had four kids, and started working as a truck driver. Due to his ear and eyesight, Teddy attempted to join the Army but was unsuccessful, so he ended up spending time in jail. Gordie and Chris both attended college prep classes together, and despite their struggles, Chris went on to become a lawyer, leading to their eventual separation. Chris was recently stabbed to death while trying to break up a fight in a restaurant.
