Living Single has developed by Yvette Lee Bowser and is based on the personal lives and professional experiences of six friends living in the Brooklyn brownstone. Kim Coles, Kim Fields, Erika Alexander, T.C. Carson, and John Henton followed. The series became an event hit by Fox and one of the most-watched Black shows of the 1990s for 5 seasons between 1993 and 1998.
“When ET visited the set in 1993, it’ll seem different from the other items.” Actually, it has.
Aside from A different world that ended in 1993, there were not many Black sitcoms that focused on the group of young individual friends, particularly editor Khadijah James (Latifah), receptionist and an aspiring actress Synclaire James-Jones (Koles), attorney Maxine Shaw (Alexander), gossip Overton Wakefield (Henton) and stockbroker Kyle Barker (Alexander), and gossip Regina Hunter (Fields) (Carson).
“These women never saw before,” Fields remarked of the idea of “four Black women of that age of 20 who are in New York and who attempt to do so.”

Years later, in 1999, Latifah remarked that “people and children and young ladies who could watch and feel proud are the ones she was most grateful to be with her co-stars at Living Single. They might feel comfortable with themselves because they might look up to some people here. And they look normal. And they look normal. Everybody isn’t meant to be that, so don’t put it in a mold and feel as if you’re supposed to be.”
Living Single is a comedy running a year before Friends from 1993 to 1998. There was a collection of twenty New Yorkers living in Brooklyn’s middle-class Park Slope. The one thing that is apparent is that the cast was African. The show won points to highlight the success of Blacks in corporate America, from law to stocks to corporate business.
His realistic image of women was one of the key features of the event. The ladies have a variety of personality and physique characteristics that are never a track record. The two men live beside the door and while at first they are considered irritating, they slowly build friendships with the women and ultimately romanticism. We’re now rebooting hell – or the sky, according to your view. And virtually every day we reveal new revivals of previous classics. But managers seeking to take advantage of the nostalgia of viewers have apparently neglected a major sector in the 90s: the black sitcoms. Amazon Prime, A Different World’s home, and Hulu, to binge family Matter and Living Singles, are the rare outliers I have ever seen.
The latter has in a way begun to reboot and has already turned into a show that evokes more than its fair share of the wistfulness of the 1990s: Friends, sixty and twenty men and women making their journey to New York. The all-white simulacrum, which was the first broadcast year following the introduction of Living Single, finally became a megahit and by the end of the ten-season show the core cast members racked up $1 million every episode.
