A young lady meets Maxim de Winter, a recent widower, while working for Mrs. Van Hopper in Monte Carlo. They have a short courtship before getting engaged. They get married and move into his Manderley estate in England. The housekeeper who was dedicated to his first wife Rebecca, who perished in a boating accident, is introduced to Mrs. de Winters as Mrs. Danvers. Rebecca was well liked by the employees and Maxim’s friends. Mrs. Danvers emphasizes the inferiority of the new Mrs. de Winter in contrast.
